Star Trek is 50 this year – and ReedPOP is boldly going to mark the occasion with a brand new enterprise entitled Star Trek: Mission New York.
Organised in partnership with Star Trek franchise owners CBS and Paramount Pictures, the three-day fan event will celebrate the show's 50th anniversary with panels, screenings, celebrity guests, exclusive merchandise and interactive exhibits. Held in Manhattan's Javits Center (home to ReedPOP’s New York Comic-Con) it will run from 2-4 September.
"Star Trek fans set the gold standard of what these types of experiential events are all about, truly establishing this industry that we’ve been so proud to be a part of," says Lance Fensterman, Senior Vice President, ReedPOP. "It will be a completely unique fan event unlike anything seen before, giving them the chance to immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe."
Star Trek enthusiasts were among the first fandoms to hold conventions, years before events like Comic-Con became mainstream. The first-ever Star Trek convention was held in New York in January 1972, seven years after the first show was aired.
Commenting on the 50th anniversary celebration, CBS consumer spokesperson Liz Kalodner said: "We couldn't be more thrilled to bring it back to the birthplace of the original Star Trek convention and do so with a partner like ReedPOP."
Over the past five decades the Star Trek franchise has grown into a multibillion-dollar canon of television shows, movies, books, comics and merchandise, satiating an ever-growing base of Trekkie superfans. 2016 certainly won’t disappoint. In addition to Star Trek: Mission New York, the next film in the Star Trek franchise – Star Trek Beyond – will be released in July and a new TV series is scheduled to launch in January 2017.
