RELX Group has announced the launch of the 2016 Environmental Challenge, and released two videos of past winners to celebrate five years of achievement.
The Environmental Challenge is an annual global competition which awards grants totalling US$75,000 to two projects that can improve access to clean drinking water and/or effective sanitation for at risk communities in developing countries.
In celebration of the first five years of the Environmental Challenge, two videos have been created highlighting the achievements of past winners:
- How the Tagore Sengupta Foundation tackles the problem of arsenic contamination in West Bengal, India
- How the Alternative Indigenous Foundation transports water to rural upland communities in the Philippines
The 2016 competition is open to any external individual or organisation that wants to make a difference in this area. The winning projects will be announced in August 2016 at World Water Week in Stockholm.
According to the United Nations, 800m people are without safe drinking water, while 2.6bn people do not have adequate sanitation facilities. Poor access to safe water and sanitation contributes to health crises in many developing countries, and increasingly leads to violent conflict.
Dr Márcia Balisciano, RELX Group’s Director of Corporate Responsibility said: “As a global business, we must do our part to address the world’s most pressing issues. The RELX Group Environmental Challenge supports our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
