Reflecting the growing opportunities for job mobility within Reed Exhibitions, Marine Devos, International Project Director, shares her experiences of moving from the International Sales Group to Reed Expositions France’s (REF) Environmental Division.
I have been working in the trade show industry for 15 years, joining Reed Exhibitions’ International Sales Group (ISG) in 2008. As a Sales Manager for ISG I worked across the cosmetics, jewellery, interior design and homeware sectors, selling Reed Exhibitions shows to French and Belgian companies, and working on new and emerging markets as well as new launches.
After six years with ISG I was keen to get back into project management. I wanted the opportunity to specialise in one industry sector, so when I heard about an internal job opportunity with REF working for the Environmental Division, I applied for the job. I took up my new role in October 2014, and I am now responsible for project managing and co-ordinating REF’s four overseas Pollutec shows. These include existing Pollutec shows in Algeria and Morocco, and two new launches in Brazil and China. I report directly to the Environmental Division Director, helping her with the shows’ strategy, sales and execution.
Working for ISG was a great training ground for my new role. It gave me valuable insights into working on different sectors and across different markets, which is useful in the global environmental sector. It taught me how to work with ‘internal clients’ as well as external ones. It gave me an international perspective on sales and international development.
ISG is a very international minded organisation. You really get a sense of ‘One Company, One Vision’ there. My current team and I try to be as flexible as we can with our ISG colleagues and support them in many ways, such as helping them with targeted email campaigns in their own languages or sharing show developments with them on a regular basis. I can advise my team on how the ISG works and what can or cannot be done and I know from first-hand experience their mission and strengths.
The environment is a totally new sector for me. It’s a very dynamic market which is constantly changing in line with new technology developments, rules and regulations. Like in any industry you work on, you need to be very globally-minded and constantly aware of what’s happening. It is a promising sector for us, and an important one for our children.
Moving from ISG to REF is helping me to fulfil my potential. I am discovering a new sector, learning new skills and continually finding new development opportunities and motivations. I would definitely recommend such a move to others. Every new role offers you additional experiences and provides great training for your career and for life.
